About the Society

WHAT DOES THE SOCIETY DO?

Holds meetings, lectures and other events; publishes papers given to the Society; and generally promotes interest in construction law in the Gulf region.

HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN IN EXISTENCE?

The Society was formed in 2006, and is affiliated with the Society of Construction Law in the UK , which was formed in 1983 and has over 2000 members. Until 2008, the Society was known as the Society of Construction Law (UAE).

WHO RUNS IT AND WHAT IS THE STRUCTURE?

A committee of 10 members, plus co-opted members and observers. The membership of the current committee is changed each year, and the current members are identified below.

WHEN DOES IT MEET?

The Society aims to hold regular events in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Bahrain. We also intend to hold further events in Oman. These events generally consist of talks from one or more prominent speakers on current topics. Members are actively encouraged to suggest topics for future meetings, so that the Society is always focussing on the needs and interests of its members.

DOES IT PUBLISH ANYTHING?

Papers from the Society's events are published on the website and are available to members.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER BENEFITS IN JOINING?

Members of the Society are able to access the papers published on the website of the Society of Construction Law in the UK at no additional cost. In addition, the Society's meetings provide an excellent opportunity to meet and get to know like-minded people.

AM I ELIGIBLE TO JOIN?

Yes, if you are interested and professionally involved in construction law. Members can come from all sectors of the construction industry, for example, architects, engineers, surveyors, contractors, developers, solicitors, barristers, arbitrators and experts.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO JOIN?

The annual subscription is Dhs.300. Non-members are welcome to attend events, at a cost of Dhs.150. The membership year runs from 31st July each year for 12 months. However, the membership of those joining between 1st April and 31st July will be extended until the end of the following July.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I LIVE OUTSIDE THE UAE?

You are still welcome to become a member.

HOW DO I JOIN?

You can join at any of the Society's events, or by contacting the Membership Secretary at Guy.Elkington@ECHarris.com. New members will have to accept the terms of the Society's members' agreement.

WHAT DOES THE MEMBERS' AGREEMENT SAY?

You can download a copy of the members' agreement from this website.

WHAT IS THE SOCIETY'S POLICY ON ADVERTISING?

The Society is an entirely non-commercial organization. It does not permit the advertising or other promotion of members' firms or companies at its events.
